If you’re moving to the UK and looking to secure a rental property, it’s important to have certain documents and/or proof at hand.
If you're new to the UK, make sure you have copies of these documents:
- Proof of Identity
A valid passport, national ID card, or biometric residency permit is essential for proving your identity. Make sure it’s up-to-date and not expired.
- Right to Rent Share Code
If you’re not a UK citizen, you’ll need to provide a share code to prove your right to rent. You can apply for a share code on gov.uk if you have a biometric residence card or permit or a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
- Proof of Income or Employment
Landlords often require proof that you can afford the rent. This could include recent payslips, a letter from your employer, or bank statements showing your income.
- Proof of Student Status (if applicable)
If you’re moving to the UK to study, you may need to provide proof of your student status. This could be an acceptance letter from your UK educational institution or a student visa.
- UK Bank Account or Proof of Funds
Having a UK bank account or proof of funds can be beneficial. Some landlords may require a UK bank account or evidence of sufficient funds to cover the deposit and first month’s rent.
- Other
Some landlords might request additional documents, such as a letter from a UK-based guarantor or proof of any special circumstances.
