During the referencing process, you will be whether you are a tenant at the property in which you are currently living. If you are, you will also be asked what your tenancy type is.
The different tenancy types that you can select are outlined below, along with an explanation of what each one is:
| Tenancy type | Explanation |
| Private residential tenancy | This means that you are renting a property from a private landlord - this can be an individual landlord or a company. |
| Council tenancy | This means that you are renting a property from the local council. |
| Housing association tenancy | This means that you are renting a property from a housing association. |
| Lodging | You are lodging if you rent a room in a landlord's home, and share other rooms (such as the kitchen or bathroom) with the landlord. |
| Subletting | You are subletting if you are renting from someone that is themselves a tenant of the property. |
| Living with friends or family | This means that you are living with friends or family, and have no official tenancy agreement in place. |
| Living in student accommodation | This means that you are living in student accommodation, and rent from a university or college. |
| Living in employer-provided accommodation | This means that you live in accommodation provided to you by your employer, but does not necessarily mean that you live where you work. This is sometimes called live-in or tied accommodation. |
| Living in temporary housing | This means that you are living in some form of temporary accommodation, such as a hostel, refuge, emergency council accommodation, or a hotel provided by your employer. |
| Living in supported housing | This means that you live in some form of supported housing, such as a dedicated home for older people or those with care needs. |
