Our referencing process is set up to handle a wide range of applicants, including those that are self-employed, claiming benefits, or not resident in the UK. However, we cannot say whether you will pass or fail until the full checks are carried out.
On OpenRent, the landlord alone decides whether to accept your application so, even if you fail referencing, this does not necessarily mean that you cannot rent the property.
How?
The most common way to rent a property even when you have failed referencing is to provide a UK-based guarantor who agrees to pay the rent should you fail to pay it in the future. Another solution can be to pay the rent for the let-period upfront, removing the risk that you won't be able to pay for it in monthly instalments in the future.
Who Decides?
On OpenRent, the landlord decides whether to accept or reject your application. Although most landlords use our referencing service, others have their own process, and in any case may accept an application regardless of the outcome of referencing.
The best thing to do is to contact the landlords of the properties you're interested in, and mention upfront any concerns you have about the application process.
